چکیده

A method to determine material parameters by comparing the evolution of experimentally determined 3D microstructures to simulated 3D microstructures is proposed. The temporal evolution of a dendritic solid-liquid mixture is acquired in situ using x-ray tomography. Using a time step from these data as an initial condition in a phase-field simulation, the computed structure is compared to that measured experimentally at a later time. An optimization technique is used to find the material parameters that yield the best match of the simulated microstructure to the measured microstructure in a global manner. The proposed method is used to determine the liquid diffusion coefficient in an isothermal Al-Cu alloy. However, the method developed is broadly applicable to other experiments in which the evolution of the three-dimensional microstructure is determined in situ. We also discuss methods to describe the local variation of the best-fit parameters and the fidelity of the fitting. We find a liquid diffusion coefficient that is different from that measured using directional solidification. © 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Determining the effective electromagnetic properties of negative-refractive-index metamaterials from internal fields

Effective electromagnetic properties of negative index of refraction metamaterials NIMs can be hard to measure. We show through simulations that electromagnetic fields inside a typical, physically realizable wireSRR split ring resonator NIM are more homogeneous than one might expect inside such metamaterials, and sufficiently structured to be useful for interpretation. Specifically, simulations...

Determining and Optimizing Effective Factors in Laser Irradiation on Skin Tensional Strength using a Hybrid DOE and DEA Approach

Introduction: We investigated the characteristic of a suitable irradiation on skin's tensional strength using design of experiments (DOE). The experiments in this research are designed in two phases and data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used for performance measurement of each phase. Material and Methods: Samples were provided from pleura as surface tissue made of collagen and elastin fibers. ...

Accuracy of Discrete Element Method Simulations: Rolling and Sliding Frictions Effects-Case study: Iron Ore Pellets

The discrete element method (DEM) has been used as a popular simulation method in order to verify the designs by visualizing how materials flow through complex equipment geometries.  Although DEM simulation is a powerful design tool, finding a DEM model that includes all real material properties is not computationally feasible.  In order to obtain more realistic results, particle energy loss du...
